Description:
This is a fine, playable example of a Clementi piano with a typical English grand action. Not original, its hammers are made of wood and covered with hard leather and its dampers are made of white cloth. Many of the damper jacks are original, with original number stamps, and are made of pear wood. The keyboard consists of ivory naturals and ebony accidentals. The soundboard is made of spruce with its grain running along the length of the case, roughly oblique to its split bridge. The entire frame is made of wood with the exception of four iron gap-stretchers. The case is made of oak covered by mahogany veneer with holly banding. The nameboard is veneered with mahogany and satinwood. The Clementi name and decoration on the nameboard is painted. The tuning pins are square in shape and are made of wrought iron. This piano has two pedals: a sustain pedal and an una corda that can be adjusted by a lever on the treble end of the keyboard, making it una corda or due corde. Some of the bottom boards, veneering, brass catches, hammer shanks, and strings are not original. The piano sits on a trestle stand rather than individual legs. The instrument was restored in 1976 by Robert E. Smith in Boston.
