Bore: 1.1 cm. at top main joint, 0.95 cm. at end main joint.

E5 English Double Flageolet by Bainbridge

English Double Flageolet, BAINBRIDGE / INVENTOR / HOLBORN / HILL / LONDON, (1821-34)
Identifying mark(s):
“BAINBRIDGE / INVENTOR / HOLBORN / HILL / LONDON” on barrel. Also stamped on both tubes: identification of all holes and keys, and finger numbers at holes.
Description:
This instrument has 10 sterling silver keys, block-mounted, 2 sterling silver cut-off key. The instrument has 4 finger holes on the B tube, 7 finger holes on D# tube (no thumb holes). It is made in 5 sections.
Material:
Boxwood with ivory ferrules, bell rings, and mouthpiece, ivory finger guides.
Notes:
This double flageolet is one of the prizes of the Collection. Bainbridge apparently originated the double flageolet, in which two instruments of different pitches are placed side by side, with a single mouthpiece. The two could be played simultaneously in thirds or, with an increase of wind pressure to overblow the lower-pitched pipe, in sixths. A cut-off key allows one pipe or the other to be silenced.

Bore: D# tube: 1.5 cm. at top main joint, 1.2 cm. at end main joint. B tube: 1.6 cm. at

E1 Recorder by H. Wrede

Recorder (formerly a flageolet?), H. Wrede, London (c.1810-57)

Materials:
Boxwood, ivory.
Notes:
This flageolet has been turned into a recorder by carving the tenon of the duct joint into a recorder mouthpiece — or else it is a recorder with a very strange mouthpiece joint. The bore at the end is narrow like a recorder’s.
Measurements:
Total length: 31.34 cm.
Speaking length: 26.95 cm.
Bore: At the end of the main joint, 0.7 cm
Former inventory #: Fipple Flute 11.
