It has a very complex key system, unusual on a flageolet, which the New York Flute Club catalog called (only by analogy) “Boehm system.”

Measurements:
Length over-all: 40.7 cm.
Speaking length: 18.5 cm.
Bore: 1.1 cm. at top main joint, 0.95 cm. at end main joint.
Former inventory #: Fipple Flute 6.

N/A

Materials:

Measurements:
Length over-all: 39.3 cm. (without mouthpiece).
Speaking length: 25.3 cm.
Bore: 1.6 cm. at top main joint, 0.95 cm. at end main joint.

Former inventory #: Fipple Flute 7.

Identifying mark(s):
“CH. MATHIEU / (star)” on mouth-piece (section with duct).

Description:
This instrument has 6 finger-holes, evenly spaced, and 2 speaking holes on either side below.

Materials:
Consists of two parts: the upper or recorder section sounds through vent holes at its lower end where the solid stick lower part is inserted. The upper recorder section is of a thin metal with a decorative hammered brass head, with a stamped design to simulate a cane top. The blow hole is in the top of this head. The lower section is of solid wood. Both parts are painted to resemble wood.

Notes:
This is a very cheap metal “canne-flûte-à-bec,” for which Mathieu took out a French patent in November, 1890.

Measurements:
Total length: 84.5 cm.
Length of recorder: 38.8 cm.
Speaking length (duct to speaker hole): 25.8 cm.
Bore: 1.1 cm.

E5 English Double Flageolet by Bainbridge

Collection: Eddy

Organized in Aerophones and Woodwinds

Click here for a permanent link to this item

English Double Flageolet, BAINBRIDGE / INVENTOR / HOLBORN / HILL / LONDON, (1821-34)

Identifying mark(s):
“BAINBRIDGE / INVENTOR / HOLBORN / HILL / LONDON” on barrel. U.K. coat of arms on fipple joint. “BAINBRIDGE / INVENTOR / 35 / HOLBORN / HILL / LONDON / NEW / PATENT” on fipple joint. “PATENT” on main joints. “NEW / PATENT” on bell joint of longer tube. Also stamped on both tubes: identification of all holes and keys, and finger numbers at holes.

Description:
This instrument has 10 sterling silver keys, block-mounted, 2 sterling silver cut-off key. The instrument has 4 finger holes on the B tube, 7 finger holes on D# tube (no thumb holes). It is made in 5 sections.

Material:
Boxwood with ivory ferrules, bell rings, and mouthpiece, ivory finger guides.

Notes:
This double flageolet is one of the prizes of the Collection. Bainbridge apparently originated the double flageolet, in which two instruments of different pitches are placed side by side, with a single mouthpiece. The two could be played simultaneously in thirds or, with an increase of wind pressure to overblow the lower-pitched pipe, in sixths. A cut-off key allows one pipe or the other to be silenced.

Measurements:
Length over-all: 53.2 cm. Speaking length: D# tube, 34.5 cm.; B tube, 38.3 cm.
Bore: D# tube: 1.5 cm. at top main joint, 1.2 cm. at end main joint. B tube: 1.6 cm. at
top main joint, 1.1 cm. at end bell joint.

Former inventory #: Fipple Flute 9.

E1 Recorder by H. Wrede

Collection: Eddy

Organized in Aerophones and Woodwinds

Click here for a permanent link to this item

Recorder (formerly a flageolet?), H. Wrede, London (c.1810-57)

Identifying mark(s):
Stamped “H. WREDE / LONDON” on the duct joint.

Description:
This instrument has one flat, square, brass key (Young type R) mounted in a “bulge” in the wood. It has 6½ finger holes (with the top hole plugged to create a half-hole), and 1 thumbhole. The instrument is made in two sections.

Materials:
Boxwood, ivory.

Notes:
This flageolet has been turned into a recorder by carving the tenon of the duct joint into a recorder mouthpiece — or else it is a recorder with a very strange mouthpiece joint. The bore at the end is narrow like a recorder’s.

Measurements:
Total length: 31.34 cm.
Speaking length: 26.95 cm.
Bore: At the end of the main joint, 0.7 cm

Former inventory #: Fipple Flute 11.
