Michael Hirata, tenor
Lewis Moore, baritone
Randall Love, square piano
Don Eagle, cornet & keyed bugle

This concert explores the musical landscape of the
CivilWar as seen through the lyrics and music from
both sides of the conflict. The North and South used
similar themes in their music, and both made use of
the word “Dixie.” This program explores patriotic
songs, works about specific battles, songs about
soldiers and their families, views of the end of the
war, and the African-American perspective. Duke
faculty soprano Penelope Jensenwill sing fromsheet
music in the Duke University Library Special
Collections. She will be joined by tenor Michael
Hirata, a Duke student, and local artist LewisMoore,
baritone. Several instruments from DUMIC’s
flagship Eddy Collectionwill be heard: Randall Love
will play a large pre-war (c.1832) square piano by
Jonas Chickering of Boston, and Don Eaglewill play
examples of 19th-century keyed bugles and cornets.
