Excerpts from Die Winterreise with early piano
January 16, 2009
4 PM
Rare Book Room
Perkins Library, Duke University West Campus
Philip van Lidth de Jeude, tenor
with
Deborah Hollis, piano

This Rare Music presentation will be an exploration of the use of an original instrument in performing Schubert’s Die Winterreise. Tenor Philip van Lidth de Jeude will be joined by Deborah Hollis on the Muzio Clementi & Co grand piano from the Eddy Collection made in London c.1805-10. The performers will present portions of the work and discuss what it means to sing with an early 19thC instrument and differences it makes for a pianist. The entire work will be performed using modern piano on January 18 in Nelson Music Room at 8 pm. Together, Rare Music and this full- length recital will provide listeners with an exciting opportunity to better understand this milestone of vocal repertoire through a comparison of the uniquely different sounds of original and modern instruments and a discussion of performance techniques faced by artists.
